Kielder 100

Kielder 100

Before gravel there were ‘tedious bits of fire road’ linking up a few good trails in the woods of Kielder (and some shabby strips of Mot Type 1 hardcore ribbons dropping down through the trees, and midges) but it was what it was and you got on with it. If these events hadn’t happened we wouldn’t be where we are today – with the tedious fire roads now epic gravel challenges™ – and a 100 miles is a hundred miles and a fair test. Paul and Sara did a top job of making it happen. I got ’round. I seem to remember sharing sections of trail with (Rockstar) Trev and Jon. And massive thanks to Dean (and Steve) who provided top support. Just need to find some photos of bikes and trails to go with these words really.

Steve gave me a very early morning lift from Kielder to Ullswater (I think the thinking was two events only 70 miles part on the same weekend was an opportunity). And Dean collected my carcass after Helvellyn (and I shall always remember his response (although not the exact words) when I asked if it was ok to get on with the run leg when I came in quite late from the cycling “that's what we came here for – get on with it!” was the gist) and waited and then shipped me home. But I'm conflating the chaos. One more quote, from a dear friend… You, sir, are a monster and I salute your particular brand of sanity :0)
